As a librarian trained to serve children and young adults you will have many options. You could work in a public library, specializing in either Children's or Young Adult Services, or you could work in an elementary, middle, or high school as a Library Media Specialist. Contrary to popular belief, librarians do more than silence people. They help match patrons to books that they will love, provide additional services like computer education, and organize programming for the library. Youth services librarians have an especially important job because they help foster a love of reading among young people. Youth services librarians can work with very young children just entering the wonderful world of books, teenagers, and every child in-between. They help maintain the library's collections with an eye towards what kids are interested in particularly. They also help lead fun events to get youth excited about the library, such as partnering with local schools or hosting storytime. Many librarians think that youth services librarians have the best job in the library since they get to have fun with children all day. However, the job is not all fun and games. Youth services librarians do a lot of work and need to put in a lot of effort before getting to their position. In fact, many have master's degrees in library science.

By taking a look through resumes, we were able to narrow down the most common skills for a person in this position. We discovered that a lot of resumes listed communication skills, initiative and interpersonal skills.
If you're interested in becoming a youth services librarian, one of the first things to consider is how much education you need. We've determined that 56.1% of youth services librarians have a bachelor's degree. In terms of higher education levels, we found that 23.5% of youth services librarians have master's degrees. Even though most youth services librarians have a college degree, it's possible to become one with only a high school degree or GED.
As you move along in your career, you may start taking on more responsibilities or notice that you've taken on a leadership role. The skills section on your resume can be almost as important as the experience section, so you want it to be an accurate portrayal of what you can do. Luckily, we've found all of the skills you'll need so even if you don't have these skills yet, you know what you need to work on. Out of all the resumes we looked through, 19.1% of youth services librarians listed social work on their resume, but soft skills such as communication skills and initiative are important as well.
Some places are better than others when it comes to starting a career as a youth services librarian. The best states for people in this position are Alaska, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and California. Youth services librarians make the most in Alaska with an average salary of $64,137. Whereas in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, they would average $61,035 and $59,318, respectively. While youth services librarians would only make an average of $58,762 in California, you would still make more there than in the rest of the country. We determined these as the best states based on job availability and pay. By finding the median salary, cost of living, and using the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Location Quotient, we narrowed down our list of states to these four.

Formerly the Davis Cup Award, this annual award is presented to a librarian serving in the state of Illinois who has made an outstanding contribution in library service to young people. Since its inception in 1971, the award has been presented to individuals who exemplify resourcefulness, professionalism, and caring in their service to young people.
The recipient must be a personal ILA member or be employed at an institution that is an ILA member. The recipient must be a degreed (MLS or MLIS) librarian currently serving children and/or families in a public or school library. A retired librarian may be nominated within the year following retirement. The nominator need not be a degreed librarian. Current members of the Youth Services Forum are ineligible for this award and may not submit a nomination.
