Upon arrival at the residence in the 6800 block of Harvest Road, officers found two people dead in the street and a third victim at the front door of the home, the sheriff's office said. Inside the home, they found three more people dead, according to the sheriff's office.
Six-Shootin' Sheriff
"We believe that this was not a random act of violence," the sheriff said. "We believe that this was a targeted family. We believe that there are gang associations involved in this scene, as well as potential narcotics investigations. As of a week ago, we as a sheriff's office conducted narcotics search warrants at this residence."
Authorities believe the shooters stood on top of the teenager and fired rounds into her head, Boudreaux said at a news conference Tuesday. Her murder was \"assassination-style\" and \"egregious,\" the sheriff said.
Three people survived the mass shooting in the farming community of Goshen, the sheriff said. The 911 call around 4 a.m. came from one of the survivors who was hiding as the gunfire erupted inside the home, the sheriff said.
The sheriff said investigators are searching for at least two suspects. They believe there is a gang connection to the killings. The sheriff's office conducted a narcotics-related search warrant at the residence last week, Boudreaux said.
The attack does not appear to be a random act of violence but may be linked to gang activity, the sheriff's office said, noting it comes a week after deputies executed a narcotics search warrant at the home.
While investigators cannot confirm the shooters were from a cartel, the sheriff thinks it appears to be a "cartel-style execution," Tulare County sheriff's spokesperson Ashley Schwarm told CNN on Monday.
The suspect, Esteban Santiago, had been taken into custody "without incident" by a sheriff's deputy immediately after the shooting, Sheriff Scott Israel said at a news conference. Israel had said earlier in the day that "at this point it looks like he acted alone."
Sheriff Scott Israel described the weapon used in the attack as a semi-automatic handgun and said it was too early in the investigation to say how many rounds were fired. The sheriff said the attacker didn't make any statements while shooting.
Israel said authorities were not releasing any information about the identities of those killed and injured. The sheriff's office tweeted that those who were injured had been taken to a local hospital.
